Broad-winged Hawk - Surveying The Forest

In the pine forest at Proud Lake State Recreation Area - Commerce Twp., MI
I went in search of the Pileated Woodpecker at Proud Lake State Recreation area, however, when the woodpecker would not show itself, I came across a Broad-winged Hawk that landed in a pine tree high above me, and a few steps from where I was standing. I was able to quietly walk up to the bird and get a few precious photographs. I was able to capture one flight shot, verifying the dark tail banks, however, the quality is less than spectacular. A life bird for me to add to my life list and to the e-bird web-site.

Lake Huron Shoreline / Lexington, Michigan

Get out and enjoy the beauty of the Great Lakes. Last Saturday, I walked the breakwall above Lexington Harbor in Lexington, Michigan. This is the view looking north along the shore of Lake Huron. Happy Spring!

Wings On Wednesday - Welcome Back - Baltimore Oriole

Via Flickr:
I was not expecting him back for another week, so I was delightfully surprised to find my summer Baltimore Oriole feeding from the suet feeder. He seemed to really enjoy the fresh suet that I put out last evening.

After seeing him, I loaded up another suet cage with fresh orange slices - his favorite food, and put them out in the backyard.

This is the earliest I can ever remember the Baltimore Oriole returning to my yard. He usually arrives in the first week of May, always announced by his clear and melodic clarion call to the neighborhood, I am here, notice me!

I have not seen these birds since they departed last summer. I am so excited!
